Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhoods Team

NEW: Police in Hayling Island seize alcohol from youths and issue advice to parents

Police in Hayling Island have seized a large quantity of alcohol from youths in Hayling Island following intervention at a gathering on the seafront.  On Friday September 25, officers from the Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhoods Team responded to reports that a party had been organised at the seafront and that a large group of youths were causing a disturbance.  At approximately 8.45pm, the police attended the location and put a stop to the party, during which alcohol was seized to prevent further anti-social behaviour from taking place.

Sergeant Steve Pratley said: 'The whole of Havant Borough is subject to a Designated Public Place Order, which grants us the powers to seize alcohol and require people to stop drinking should it be deemed necessary to do so to prevent disorder.  In this incident it would appear that a birthday party was organised to take place on the seafront.  There were between 70 and 100 teenagers that we felt necessary to disperse for a number of reasons. The majority had been drinking and their behaviour was becoming anti-social.  We had three or four reported assaults from youths, all of which were alcohol related, which are currently being investigated.

It was very evident that a lot of the alcohol had been taken from the youths homes and we would issue a warning to parents to make sure that they do not let their children remove alcohol from their property.  This is both to prevent them from becoming involved in potential criminal activity and to also ensure their well being and safety.  While the police do not wish to disrupt lawful and organised events, we will always seek to stop gatherings of this kind from taking place to ensure that the local community does not suffer disruption.'

Anyone wishing to report an incident of alcohol related anti-social behaviour should contact Hampshire Constabulary on 0845 045 45 45, Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or use the dedicated Single Non-Emergency number 101. In an emergency always dial 999.

More information on Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhood Team

Sergeant Steve Pratley is responsible for the policing of Hayling Island Neighbourhood and would like to introduce you to his team.  The team has clear aims and priorities that include:

Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhood Team

Targeting and dealing with all anti-social behaviour issues.

  • Getting to know the community by attending all local meetings
  • Working and forming a close link with other agencies.
  • Promoting schemes like Neighbourhood Watch.
  • Getting all residents on Hayling Island to know who their team are, who to contact and how to contact them when needed.

Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhoods Team works with local schools and youth projects to help educate young people regarding anti-social behaviour and crime prevention. This includes holding a regular beat surgery at The Hayling College.

Hayling Island now has the largest Safer Neighbourhoods Team that it has ever had. An integral part of the team are the Police Community Support Officers (PCSO). The presence of these officers has allowed the key issue of anti-social behaviour and juvenile nuisance to be targeted resulting in a considerable drop in not just reported incidents but overall crime as well.

The role of the PCSOs is to provide a visible and re-assuring presence for the majority of their duty time, dealing with issues that concern people such as anti-social behaviour and graffiti. This allows Police Officers to carry out roles such as attending emergency calls, investigation and bringing cases to court and offenders to justice.

Hayling Island Safer Neighbourhoods Team holds bi-monthly surgeries utilising a Mobile Police Station. This has proved to be a very useful event and allows us to promote where we are going to be to give residents the opportunity to come and speak with us. The team have also been involved in attending the Bridge Centre for the Pride of Place initiative each Wednesday morning.

Hayling Island Station is open Monday – Friday between the hours of 1600 and 2000.
